Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Salinger Stakes is a Victoria Racing Club Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne on VRC Derby Day. The event is an open handicap run over a distance of 1200 metres and is held during the Melbourne spring carnival in late October or early November.

The race is run down the 1200m straight course and has previously been known as 'The Age Classic' and 'Linlithgow Stakes'. It was raced at weight-for-age before being renamed the Salinger Stakes and is run on Derby Day as a handicap.

Salinger Stakes is run on the first day of the four day Flemington spring racing carnival.

Derby day features four Group 1 races, the AAMI Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes, Mackinnon Stakes, and the Myer Classic.

Quality types to win this race include TakeoverTarget (2004), Flavour (1998), Gold Ace (1996), Hareeba (1994) and Special in 1988. Horses running in this event may head towards the Gr1 Patinack Farm Classic on the final day of the Flemington carnival.
